Cheap Ways to Update Your Living Room

Living rooms… We spend so much time in them that neglecting to update it would be a mistake. It would also be a mistake because you would be missing out on so much added home value! We have researched the best ways to update your living room to add value to your home, and don’t worry, they’re also budget friendly!

1. Paint, you guessed it!

Welcome back to another episode of updating your home, I am your host, Paint! Paint will always be your best friend when selling a home. Neutral colors are the best colors to use when painting a room because they open up the space and they let the home buyer imagine what they could do to that space to make it theirs!

2. Change the Hardware

Yes, believe it or not, there is hardware in your living room. Change out or paint over the light switch and outlet plates. Update the lighting. If you have weird lighting, you can install recessed lighting to make the room look brand new. You don’t really need to do much to these, but every little detail counts.

3. Install Hardwood Floors

Hardwood floors are at the top of the Interior Design food chain. They are the alphas and everyone wants hardwood floors in their homes. Carpet in the living room makes the room look small, cluttered, and dirty. Change out that carpet for some hardwood floors and watch as the value of your home increases.

4. Architectural Molding

Long are the days when bare, smooth walls were in fashion. Everyone wants texture in their home and the simplest way of doing this is to add some crown molding, paneling, or wainscoting. If you don’t think you can install this yourself, you can hire a carpenter to install these for you, or if you’re feeling brave, install them yourself! This DIY project can give you new skills and it can also save you thousands of dollars.

5. Get Rid of Popcorn Ceilings

Boy oh boy… Popcorn ceilings. Why? In today’s age, no one wants to see popcorn ceilings anywhere in their house! Popcorn ceilings make the room look small, dark, and dirty. Get rid of them! Potential buyers want to see clean cut spaces that are easy on the eyes and allow them to visualize their lives in their new home. If you are feeling brave, you can take these off yourself, but be careful! If your home was built around the 1950s, get your ceiling checked for asbestos. Do not attempt to remove popcorn ceilings by yourself if you don’t have experience.

6. Add More Storage

If your living room doesn’t have built in shelves or extra storage, consider installing some. These can add extra value to your home because we are all looking to keep our living room organized. You can build them yourself or have someone install them for you. It’ll be worth it in the long run when you see the value of your home increase!
